Minimizing Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy

About 50 to 90 percent of pregnancies occur with some degree of nausea and vomiting during the first trimester, but there are also some women who experience this all throughout their pregnancy period. These are considered to be normal and the most common symptoms that a woman may experience during their pregnancy.

Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is more commonly known as “morning sickness.” The exact cause of this is still unknown but many researchers believe it has something to do with the changes that the body has to undergo during pregnancy such as high hormone levels.

Good nutrition is important to the mother and the baby especially during the first trimester period and having nausea and vomiting can be a hindrance in delivering the required nutrition needed. Treatment for this depends on the severity of the pregnancy nausea, but most often it consists of dietary modification with an addition of antiemetic medications if necessary. Although nausea and vomiting cannot directly affect the baby, dehydration and metabolic imbalances brought on by it can.

Preventing the symptoms is difficult, but there are ways that could minimize and control its effects.

1.Diet modification- Eating frequent, but small meals can help regulate the blood sugar levels preventing nausea. Also avoid eating spicy, fatty, and oily foods. These are the usual culprits of pregnancy nausea. Also try to determine the foods that triggers your nausea so you can avoid the problematic foods. It is also best to avoid carbonated and caffeinated beverages. Small but frequent sips of drinks throughout the day are also very important.

2.Try switching brands of prenatal vitamins- Some women experience sensitivity in prenatal vitamins that worsens nausea. Asking your doctor to give you different brands and switching brands every few weeks may help.

3.Alternative remedies- Some attest to the effectiveness of alternative remedies such as relaxation techniques like aromatherapy, massage and acupressure. The message is for a pregnant woman to relax. Relaxing will alleviate the symptoms of nausea and vomiting.

4.Pregnancy lollipops and lozenges- Many women have been experiencing the benefits of minimizing their nausea with the use of pregnancy lollipops and lozenges that are available in the market.
