High Prolactin

Prolactin in its normal levels is an important hormone. It increases considerably during pregnancy and aid in lactation. If a women has high prolactin before she is pregnant, her body essentially believes it is already pregnant so ovulation is non existant. High prolactin is found in 1/3 of all fertility patients.

There are several causes of high prolactin. One of which is hypothyroidism. Others can be more dangerous like a pituitory gland tumor. There are many ways to deal with high prolacin. One way is through Bromocriptine. It works by supressing prolactin producion. Bromocriptine is taken orally and women can expect ovulation to return on about six weeks.
